Fifield

Like so many of Lachlan’s charming small towns, Fifield gathers its community together around its hotel – an attractive federation-style establishment with a large upstairs balcony. This focal point is a great place to enjoy a drink, a game of pool or darts, while the neighbouring community hall and park across the road hint at its role as a hub for the surrounding farms. The park’s rusty red tractor monument provides further clues as to the pastoral importance of the region.

However, it wasn’t always sheep, cattle and crops around here. Fifield was actually once Australia’s largest platinum producer – with large deposits (along with gold) first discovered here in the 1880s. Around 20,000 ounces (650kg) of alluvial platinum was removed from the surrounding land – a fascinating shiny insight into a faded past.

These days it’s all about farming and grazing livestock, or depending on the time of year, a range of crops growing or ready for harvest.
